A Fuelish Notion

Some school districts are considering four-day instructional weeks to save money on bus fuel.

I have to say, I love this idea.

Selfishly speaking, I would love the four-day workweek and three-day weekend split; I think it makes much more logical sense. It would, as many advocates have pointed out, save money on gas and commute time.

More than that — and more cynically — I think it would finally make some parents realize to what degree they depend upon schools for many things, but not the least for the tax-based, government-sponsored daycare that allows them to maintain a lifestyle affordable only by two-income families. For those retirees and others who complain about higher taxes funding education, surely they’re aware to what degree our entire consumer economy depends upon income earned from a two-earner family. Without school there to be our society’s babysitter, more parents would have to stay home.

Sometimes, you don’t know how much you’re gonna miss something ’till it’s gone.
