On the morning of Election Day, a blog dedicated to a discussion of education seems gloriously irrelevant. Today is not a day to talk about education. It’s a day to reap its harvest.
Here’s hoping that our young people have been well-served by the adults entrusted with their education, so that they appreciate the ideals of our democracy and the sloppy miracle of this day. May their knowledge of history be deep enough to allow a little bit of awe–and a large amount of pride–to witness a handover of power marked by passion, but not by tanks in the streets and flights into exile.
May they understand and appreciate that regardless of what lever is pulled inside the voting booth, every vote cast is a vote of confidence in something grand and delicate. May we have taught our children to value what they have been given. May we have inspired them to protect, continue and improve it.
