Reading, Writing and Exorcism

A student at a Mississippi high school spoke in tongues and predicted the deaths of several of her classmates this week.  A Jackson TV station got word of the incidents from fellow students at Pelahatchie High school who were convinced that an evil spirit had taken over Lashundra Clanton. Parents, meanwhile, are upset they weren’t notified about the situation.

“It was disturbing to a lot of students,” Pelahatchie sophomore Rob Sparks tells WAPT-TV.   “It made some students cry and leave school.  Some have not returned yet.”  Sparks and his classmates were so convinced Clanton was possessed that he and his friends brought bibles to school and had a “devotional,” the TV station reported.

For her part, Clanton admits she spoke in tongues and made predictions about her classmates. But she said it was God speaking through her, not the devil.  “Some believe, some don’t.” Clanton says. “They say it was the devil, but the devil only tells lies. Everything I said was the truth.”

“I didn’t cuss anyone out,” Clanton said. “If it was a demon, I would have tore that school up. I would have thrown desks and everything. I didn’t say no cuss words at all.” Meanwhile, around town and especially in Pelahatchie’s churches, WAPT reports, people have been debating if Clanton is delivering messages from God, from the devil or any spirit at all.

Parents are criticizing the school for handling the situation poorly, which wrankles a Mississippi teacher who blogs as Deadpan Ann.  “What slackers!” she writes.  “They need to organize a committee to prepare just in case this happens again! Every school should have a Demonic Possession Response Team on standby at all times! What were they thinking??”

I’m with Ann.  Sounds like school officials know exactly how to handle attention seeking behavior.
