What We Know

Red Tier, Green Tier, One Two…Rhee!  New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg is curious about DC’s proposed teacher pay scheme. The Gotham Girls have the scoop…….A watchdog group says one-third of the items sold by Scholastic’s book clubs are not books.  They’re not happy………Hundreds of students have allegedly been beaten by teachers, coaches and staff at Chicago Public Schools.  Hundreds??!?  Sounds fishy……..Eduflack channels Diane Ravitch, noting schools can’t be run like a business

What We Want to Find Out

How’s that effort to unionize a KIPP school going? Depends on who you ask……..Should America’s Black History Month itself fade into history?  Some African-Americans say it’s paternalistic; most educators say it’s here to stay……..Four years after New York State passed a law creating a commission to promote the teaching of black history in public schools, the commission has never met and 5 of its 19 seats have yet to be filled…….Which causes you to cringe more?  Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue or Russo’s “Hot for Education” poll.  Both are out this week.

What We Learned

Education is not recession proof. This analysis says education could lose well over half a million jobs……..If you do lose your job, have a better Plan B than this 4th grade teacher…….A Long Island couple who objected to immunization for their child on religious grounds say they were subjected to a “sincerity test,” by an attorney for the school district, which ultimately ruled their beliefs were “too questionable.”

How We Can Learn More

This teacher is in hot water for ill-advised fashion tips to a student.  And this principal would have been better off simply calling calling a plumber……..Teaching probability?  This story would make a great read-aloud and discussion……..Give me your tired, your poor.  Your huddled masses yearning to be free of $30G in private school tuition.
