Suri Cruise to Attend School With Common Core Standards!

Surprising poll result:  Two-thirds of teachers have a “very favorable” or “somewhat favorable” view of Common Core State Standards.

Unsurprising poll result:  60% of Americans say they have seen, read, or heard “nothing at all” about the new standards in the past six months.

Maybe the headline will help.

  1. Robert,

I was about to take you to the woodshed for covering anything to do with a celebrity offspring, especially one of Scientology fame, but then I read the piece.

Played golf this morning with a couple of friends from my old district and they both laughed when I asked about what’s being done with the new CCSS. A Massachusetts suburb worried about MCAS test results? That IS a laughing matter.

  2. I must admit after last night’s dinner discussion of data and personal choice while teaching, this was a satisfying read.

  3. I’m actually surprised that the % of Americans who’ve heard of CCSS is at 60%–I figured it would be much lower. As an educator, I’ve definitely heard of them, but honestly, I don’t know too much about them and have not had the time or energy to look into them at this point. My district is offering training on CCSS, so I know I’ll be in the loop eventually…

I have hope for the new standards. I think it’s important that we all be on the same page, whether you live in Washington or Maine. After reading the headline about Suri (ha!), it got me thinking about the lack of communication and education of the general public on the standards. Average Joe on the street won’t be provided a training on CCSS like myself, so how and where will he learn about it?

The cynical part of me wonders if it’s even worthwhile to communicate CCSS to the public. Maybe this is just another “flavor of the month” that will quickly dissipate and turn into some other cool title in a year or two. It seems that is how it goes. While I appreciate the need to change and adapt to the needs of students, it seems like there is barely time to perfect one thing before it morphs into, or is replaced, by something else.

    Only time will tell…
